BEER BASICS:

There are 2 types of beer - ALES and LAGERS.  All other beers are essentially one or the other.

The difference between them is the yeast.

  • Ales have been around for thousands of years. They are made using top fermentation yeasts and warm fermentation temperatures.
    • Pale Ale, Brown Ale, Porter and Stout
  • Lagers have been around since the mid-19th century. They are made using bottom fermentation yeats and cool fermentation temperatures.
    • Pale Lager, Pilsner, Light Lager and Dark Lager
